Data vs. Information

Data is raw material used as input and information is processed data obtained as output of data processing.

Data is raw, unorganized facts that need to be processed. Data can be something simple and seemingly random and useless until it is organized. Each student's test score is one piece of data.

When data is processed, organized, structured or presented in a given context so as to make it useful, it is called Information. The class' average score or the school's average score is the information that can be concluded from the given data.

  1. I am interested into what can be done with information once it has been extracted from data. Have you ever heard of anyone storing the extracted information and processing it inside a computer program? Do you know what any of the storage structures are for information? I have built one I call an endeme which can store information, and I am looking for others. This sort of processing is my specialty.
